Commentary
1. Many Saints through the centuries have written and preached about a whole array of subjects and interestingly enough some perspectives that we assume to be common come from somewhere and have more depth to the explanation. A Commentary compiles this together.
2. There are many different commentaries available, but not all of them are good. Here is a list and description of the good ones.
a. Haydock Catholic Bible Commentary (http://haydock1859.tripod.com/) – Many different Saints, Doctors and Early Church Fathers quoted. Those who have erred in the Faith are also quoted to illustrate the error. As Douay Rheims translation is used, go to http://www.newadvent.org/bible/. The Douay Rheims translation is the most accurate Catholic translation of Sacred Scripture available.
b. Navarre Commentary (http://groups.google.com/group/dailyword-weekahead) – The Navarre Commentary was compiled by the University of Navarre, various Church Documents and Saints are quoted, but the thrust of the Commentary is more devotional than factual. The Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition is the translation that is referred to.
c. Cantena Aurea (http://www.catecheticsonline.com/CatenaAurea.php) – Also known as the Golden Chain, was compiled by St Thomas Aquinas. Contains commentary by numerous early Church Fathers.
d. Christ Passing By (http://www.escrivaworks.org/book/christ_is_passing_by.htm) – Written by St Jose Maria Escriva and based on his homilies and arranged liturgically.
e. Recommended but not freely available online: Ignatius Study Bible
